Improving livestock quality and protecting genetic resources ”sub-project is being implemented in three aimags

The Mongolian national federation of pasture user groups, in cooperation with the Center for Sustainable Agricultural Research and Development, is implementing a sub-project entitled “Improving Livestock Quality and Protecting Genetic Resources” within the framework of the ENSURE project “Ensuring Mongolia's Natural Endurance and Sustainability”. These include:

1) To improve the quality of livestock and reduce pasture degradation, 63 herder households proposed by the management and specialists of 6 baghs and agricultural departments located in the protected areas of Ulziit soum of Arkhangai aimag, Bayantsagaan soum of Bayankhongor aimag, and Erdene soum of Gobi-Altai aimag in 2020. As a result of inspection and surveying of 9924 small animals by the relevant instructions and procedures:

  • In the future, 921 female sheep, 992 female goats, and in total 1913 female inseminators were selected from the core herd for breeding selected and registered by classifying earings with the aimag, soum, and bag codes.
  • The main basis for improving the quality of livestock is standard insemination, and according to the results of surveys conducted in the above soums:
  • Ulziit soum of Arkhangai supply of rams and goats 55.1-68.5% or 1209 inseminators are missing,

  • 84.7% of existing rams and 86.8% of goats do not require the standard.

  • Bayantsagaan soum of Bayankhongor supply of rams and goats 50.4-78.3% or 893 inseminators are missing,

  • 79.3% of existing rams and 80.7% of goats did not require the standard.

  • Erdene soum of Gobi-Altai supply of rams and goats 58.3-75.5% or 789 inseminators are missing,

  • 74.8% of rams and 83.5% of goats do not meet the standard requirements, which is a priority to bring the quality and supply of small livestock inseminators, which make up the majority of the total livestock in these soums, to the standard level.

  • Based on the results of the survey conducted by the project consulting team, the draft “Short-term and medium-term (2021-2030) Strategic Plan for Livestock Breeding” of the three soums was developed and officially submitted to the respective soum citizen representative khural for approval.

  • As of the 1st quarter of 2021, the “Short-term and medium-term (2021-2030) Strategic Plan for Livestock Breeding” has been approved by the Citizens' Representative Khurals of Bayantsagaan and Erdene soums of Gobi-Altai aimag and is working to organize its implementation.

  • As a result of conducting relevant research and discussions to establish a “Livestock Breeding and Technological Service Unit” in cooperation with the local authorities and professional organizations of Erdene soums of Arkhangai aimag, Bayantsagaan soum of Bayankhongor aimag, and Erdene soums of Gobi-Altai aimag:

  • In the Saiga region: the Ulziit soum of Arkhangai aimag was selected and a “livestock breeding, technological work, and service unit” was established based on “Uguuj Oyun Khangai” LLC, which operates in the field of veterinary medicine and breeding. The unit is headed by B. Gombodorj It was agreed with the soum administration and specialists to work.

  • To support the operation of the newly established unit in Ulziit soum, the project purchased 53 rams, 37 goats, a total of 90 young inseminators, and handed 1 set of mobile livestock fences.

  • In the Zarman Gobi region: Erdene soum of Gobi-Altai aimag was selected and a “livestock breeding, Prepare and supply livestock raw materials to the market technological work, and service unit” was established based on “Buleen us erdene” cooperative, which is engaged in preparing and supplying livestock raw materials to the market. Dorj Ch is appointed in this work.

  • To support the operation of the newly established unit in Erdene soum, the project purchased 96 lambs, 50 goats, and 96 young inseminators.

  • It is also necessary to get acquainted with the process and results of insemination care purchased in the “livestock breeding, technological work and service units” of the two soums, to determine the live weight in autumn, to assess growth and obesity, and to greet the coming winter and spring. The measures are being implemented in cooperation with the soum local authorities and specialists. Within the framework of this work, the project provided 15.3 tons of hay, 1.5 tons of green fodder, and 2.5 tons of forage for the introduction of young inseminators.
